Pyrite Facts

The color ranges in a brassy-yellow color to a brownish-gold. It is harder than gold with a bit more luster. The name stems from the Greek word for fire, pyros because of the sparks created by striking against a hard surface. The mineral is found all over the world in various forms including flat disk formations. It's nickname comes from the history of mine owners using the glittery mineral to pepper their mines to dupe prospectors. Native Americans used it for divination mirrors and for the mineral's mystical properties. The mineral was all the rage in Victorian England as it was used for buckles, rings and other accessories.
